The CV – Passport to a better future.
A CV should be a carefully crafted document; after all it is a direct representation of you and the springboard toward the selection process. When constructing a CV consider these points;
OBJECTIVE – What are you trying to achieve?
- Create interest and gain an interview.
- Provide personal information.
- Present a career history, state academic and vocational achievements.
- Match your experience to the job vacancy.
STYLE – Look good, Attract attention.
- Place information in logical sequence.
- Be concise, but don’t skip on detail.
- Use design to make an impression.
- Be proud of the finished product.
CONTENT – What to include.
- Personal details, Contact information, date of birth, marital status.
- Education summary, Secondary and Higher plus any vocational training.
- Job Summary, Use bullet points, Company name, Job Title, Dates of employment, Nature of business, your role and responsibilities.
- Include any significant achievements.
SEQUENCE – Make it flow.
- Personal Details.
- Work history in reverse chronological order, most recent first.
- Academic achievements.
- Brief reference to interests and hobbies.
AVOID – The common slip ups!
- Being boring, don’t go on and on and on and on.
- Make sure dates match up, don’t leave gaps.
- Don’t put salary or package details on your CV.
- Try not to go over 2 A4 sheets.
- Do not use pictures or unnecessary graphs, boxes or charts.
